Almost a year ago, alongside Clean Creatives and other B Corp agencies, we wrote to B Lab to question their stance on B Corp agencies working with fossil fuel clients. With no adequate response, we submitted a formal complaint to B Lab with Clean Creatives, and this review is still ongoing.

Whilst B Lab continues to deliberate, the work these B Corp agencies are producing for fossil fuel polluters includes greenwashing gas companies, direct lobbying on behalf of coal producers, and pushing consumers to buy more gasoline. These activities are in direct contradiction to B Lab’s mission of protecting people and the planet.

Clean Creatives have written to B Lab to provide this information and we request that B Lab to listen and act – the climate crisis is ever increasing and as an organisation that promises to use business as a force for good, they need to make the right decision.

Chris Norman MBE, Founder and CEO of GOOD Agency says

“This new evidence uncovered by Clean Creatives shows the urgent need for B Lab to set clear and unequivocal rules on B Corps working with fossil fuel companies. It shows that agencies are exploiting the certification and significantly undermining its value. B Lab needs to decertify these fossil fuel supporting agencies. It has been almost a year since we first raised this issue, and in that time these agencies have been actively greenwashing, lobbying and promoting fossil fuel companies whilst operating as a B Corp – giving them an ethical cloak to continue to do so.

The lack of a decision by B Lab undermines confidence in the organisation. As time continues to go by, it makes any B Corp agency seriously question the value of an accreditation from an organisation that is directly contradicting its main mission to protect people and the planet.”

Duncan Meisel, Executive Director of Clean Creatives says

“The case for excluding fossil fuel agencies from B Corp certification could not be clearer. The work these B Corp agencies are doing for fossil fuel polluters includes greenwashing gas companies, direct lobbying on behalf of coal producers, and pushing consumers to buy more gasoline, all in direct contradiction to B Lab’s mission of protecting people and the planet. Decertifying fossil fuel agencies is vital to protecting the B Corp brand and strengthening the B Corp community.”
